Vanderbilt added 6′-3″ point guard Shelton Mitchell of Oak Hill Academy (VA), via North Carolina, on Friday to their 2014 recruiting class. Mitchell was the sole remaining unsigned top-100 prospect nationally.
Wake Forest’s loss in the Commodores’ gain, as Mitchell re-opened his commitment after the dismissal of former Demon Deacons head coach Jeff Bzdelik.
Mitchell is one of the most heady and skilled lead guards in the 2014 class nationally, though his senior season was beset by an injury. He joins a crop of four good shooters at the wing positions that have already signed to Vanderbilt.
Mitchell’s recruitment reportedly came down to Missouri and Vanderbilt, with NC State on the outside looking in. He seems like a strong fit for the Commodores system, and is clearly an important late addition.
