The following is an except from the FREE 2014 National High School Basketball Preview publication, published by Download your copy of the 2014 National High School Basketball Preview publication using the button below this paragraph. The publication includes the Terrific 30 High School Rankings, Top 5 Post Graduate teams, Top 100 Seniors, Best Tournaments and Events and underclassmen player rankings!

Note: As of press time, November 10, 2014, many tournaments had yet to officially release their schedules and fields.

  1. DICK’S Sporting Goods High School Nationals (New York, NY)

What: Eight high school teams are picked from across the country to play for what could legitimately be called the most legitimate national high school sports championship, as a post-season event.

Who: At-large selections from eligible independent and association teams by the tournament organizers.

When: April 2 – 4, 2015

  1. City of Palms Classic (Fort Myers, FL)
Ben Simmons (Kelly Kline/Under Armour)
Ben Simmons (Kelly Kline/Under Armour)

What: The 42nd annual event has been known for several years as the top in-season high school tournament nationally, and frankly it isn’t all that close. This tournament will represent a sizable challenge for No. 1 ranked Montverde Academy (FL) with a substantial field of teams.

Who: A 17 team Classic bracket features 9 members of the pre-season Terrific 30, and the balance of the bracket is capable of being nationally ranked with strong performances. The Signature series has Balboa City (CA) and elite sophomore center DeAndre Ayton, as well as Potter’s House Christian (FL) and La Lumiere (IN).

When: December 18-23, 2014

  1. Tarkanian Classic (Las Vegas, NV)

What: Harkening back to the 90s when Las Vegas was a major destination for December holiday tournaments, the Tarkanian Classic gets better and deeper every season. Four separate team divisions feature players for every college coach to find valuable to recruit, as well as a high competition level of evenly matched games..

Who: Bishop Gorman (NV) is the host and highest-ranked squad in the Platinum Division, but Chino Hills (CA), Corona Centennial (CA), Lone Peak (UT), Prestonwood Christian (TX) and West Linn (OR) all could seriously raise their national profiles with success here. Also of high-interest is the Prep Division, which features Findlay Prep (NV), Prolific Prep (CA) and Prime Prep (TX) among many squads.

When: December 17-20, 2014

  1. Bass Pro Shops Tournament of Champions (Springfield, MO)

What: A rare loaded tournament in the post-Christmas time frame, the Tournament of Champions has thrived in recent years with the best in-state teams and a full complement of national-caliber squads across an eight team field that favors quality over quantity.

Who: Pre-season Terrific 30 squads Oak Hill Academy (VA), Wesleyan Christian (NC) and Bishop O’Dowd (CA) will have their hands full with Bentonville (AR), Chino Hills (CA) and Paul VI (VA).

When: January 15-17, 2014

  1. Chick-Fil-A Classic (Richland, SC)

What: Sixteen squads from up and down the eastern seaboard form what should be a better-than-good tournament in South Carolina.

Who: Three ranked squads headline the field, including Our Savior New American (NY), Arlington Country Day (FL), and Cape Henry Collegiate (VA). Many of the other teams have nationally ranked players lining their rosters, so some surprises could result and sleeper teams certainly could emege.

When: December 19-23, 2014.

  1. Beach Ball Classic (Myrtle Beach, SC)

What: A long-running tournament of high-acclaim, the Beach Ball Classic is strong once again, but perhaps not the elite event it has been in the past.

Who: Bishop Gorman (NV), North Little Rock (NV), and St. Francis (GA) will start the season nationally ranked, and squads such as Sagemont (FL), St. Edward (OH) and others could earn such a designation with strong play in the Beach Ball Classic.

When: December 26-31, 2014.

  1. Les Schwab Invitational (Hillsboro, OR)

What: A long-running post-Christmas tournament in Nike’s backyard traditionally has some powerhouse programs, and this year is no different with three pre-season Terrific 30 squads entered.

Who: Montverde Academy (FL), Rainier Beach (WA) and Wheeler (GA) will have their hands full with many Oregon squads, including West Linn (OR), Jefferson (OR), and Central Catholic (OR).

When: December 27-30, 2014.

  1. Iolani Prep Classic (Iolani, HI)

What: There are certainly worse things than spending December in Hawaii, and several of the nation’s best teams will do just that in another edition of a traditionally very strong event.

Who: Bishop O’Dowd (CA) and Oak Hill Academy (VA) are the pre-season ranked teams, but Miller Grove (GA) and Lexington Catholic (KY) are traditional powerhouses in their respective states.

When: December 16 – 20, 2014.

  1. MaxPreps Holiday Classic (Palm Springs, CA)

What: A massive event that features multiple divisions, but the Invitational Division is of the most interest with numerous strong teams and future D-1 players set to take the hardwood.

Who: SoCal powerhouses Sierra Canyon (CA) and Mater Dei (CA) appear to be on a collision course for each other, but don’t overlook Prestonwood Christian (TX) and several other squads.

When: December 26-30, 2014.
