North Carolina nabs second ’18 commit, PG Coby White

North Carolina snared a verbal commitment, just days after tendering a scholarship offer, to 6′-4″ in-state point guard Coby White of Greenfield (NC) on Thursday.

White, a top-30 national prospect, joins fellow elite prospect Rechon “Leaky” Black in the class thus far for the Tar Heels, which is at this (extremely) early stage the best committed duo for 2018. Black is also an in-state prospect, though he just recently announced a transfer to Montverde Academy (FL) to close out his final two years of high school.

White came on strong during the summer for the top notch CP3 16-U team, which participated in the 16-U Nike Elite Youth Basketball League. Other ACC schools like Clemson and Virginia were reportedly among the early scholarship offers White had notched.

North Carolina was also in the hunt for in-state point guard Devon Dotson for the 2018 recruiting cycle, so landing White will likely end that pursuit.

The addition of White in 2018 should give the Tar Heels flexibility in the backcourt. Though incoming freshman Seventh Woods and 2017 guard Jalek Felton have experience playing point guard, both are likely best suited scoring off the ball, which bringing in White should allow North Carolina to do.
