Kansas lands first pledge for ’17, Marcus Garrett

In an era when highly touted basketball prospects are followed from the time they are in middle school and on, Marcus Garrett may be a bit of an anomaly. Playing for Skyline (TX), he burst on the scene as a junior, gained steam over the summer as a high-riser, and popped as the first Kansas Jayhawks recruit for the 2017 recruiting cycle on Monday.

Garrett went from being little known to now being a top-50 recruit in the class. He has tremendous size at 6′-5″ and really showed his versatility as a junior, averaging 18 points, 10 assists and 7 rebounds for a strong high school team.

According to, Garrett picked Kansas over scholarship offers from many other programs, including Big 12 foes Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, TCU and Texas, along with Connecticut, Oregon and others.

Garrett will join a solid backcourt as a freshman, with Malik Newman expected to be eligible following a transfer year, and Devonte Graham set to be a senior. Garrett’s size and versatiltiy should give him the ability to see time as a reserve in both backcourt slots, as he learns the Kansas system. At the end of the day, Garrett is a tremendous addition for Kansas and one that will potentially pay even more dividends as time moves on.
