The result is what should be a much more accurate ranking list than our first week’s Terrific 30, which was primarily based on last year’s results and expected talent on each roster. Next Five: Sagemont (FL), Putnam City West (OK), St. Joseph (IL), St. Edward (OH), Southwind (TN) Dropped Out: St. Francis (GA), North Little Rock (AR), Bishop Gorman (NV), Chino Hills (CA), Archbishop Carroll (PA) Read More »

The 2012-2013 high school basketball season is nearly in the books, with state champions named in every state, and the ESPN National High School Invitational set for April 4-6 to complete the season. That event will likely have a major impact on the final rankings, but for now each state association have multiple schools that are still celebrating their season’s success. Last week, surprise champions won titles in Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania  respectively, where long-term ranked Pershing (MI) ... Read More »

A surprising result in the Alhambra Catholic Invitational spurred a new entry to the Hoopniks Terrific 30, presented by Krossover, as then No. 17 La Lumiere School (IN) traveled to Maryland, but lost in the semifinals to new No. 26 Bishop O’Connell (VA). With seven losses, O’Connell has the most losses of any squad in the rankings, but it’s hard to ignore their quality wins. La Lumiere remains in the Terrific 30, as O’Connell takes the place of upstart Bishop Montgomery (CA), ... Read More »

High school basketball being what it is, the month of March has already provided some tremendous upsets last week. Two top-ten teams from last week, previously ranked No. 7 St. Anthony (NJ) and No. 9 Lake Oswego (OR) both suffered shocking losses prior to their state championships, and fall out of the Hoopniks Terrific 30, presented by Krossover. New Jersey’s hopes for a ranked team beyond No. 5 St. Benedict’s Prep (NJ)  falls to Roselle Catholic (NJ), which has five losses but should be the ... Read More »

The end of February gives way to March Madness across the country, not only at the NCAA level, but also in high school hoops. Last week saw a bit of madness, as previously undefeated Bishop Montgomery (CA) had their Cinderella season interrupted with an upset loss to La Verne Lutheran (CA). Prior to the loss, they had an outside shot at achieving a mythical national title. Another change from last week, was a drop after a road loss by Huntington Prep (WV). They took ... Read More »

Late season upsets expelled previously unbeaten Midwest City (OK) and Roosevelt (DC) from this week’s rankings, and Montrose Christian (MD) and Morgan Park (IL), are recognized instead. By and large most of the members of the Hoopniks Terrific 30, presented by Krossover, are finishing up their regular seasons, or participating in regional or state tournaments. In that respect, there is some opportunity to excel late, as Morgan Park did in defeating highly-regarded Simeon (IL) in the semifinals of the Chicago Public ... Read More »

The astute observer will notice minimal changes from last week’s Hoopniks Terrific 30, presented by Krossover, as many squads have completed their regular seasons, and are facing weaker opponents in the opening rounds of their respective state and area tournaments. Perhaps the most interesting game result of note was the loss by Oak Hill Academy (VA) to Omaha Central (NE) in the Heartland Hoops Classic. While Omaha Central was a pre-season ranked team in the ... Read More »

The anticipated showdown between two top-5 ranked teams from last week’s rankings wasn’t exactly as planned, as last week’s No. 2 St. Benedict’s Prep (NJ) took some of the luster off of their game against previously No. 5 ranked St. Anthony (NJ), by losing earlier in the week to Blair Academy (NJ). St. Benedict’s Prep recovered admirably, though, has to be credited with a major rebound in breaking an 83 game win streak in their victory over the Friars. ... Read More »
