Cal is Golden for Tyrone Wallace, Top Remaining Combo Guard

Given that the heart and soul of Cal’s basketball program, guard Jorge Gutierrez will exhaust his eligibility after this season, there will be a huge void in the backcourt in Berkeley, California, next year. Though there is some promising talent on the roster, California struck gold on the recruiting trail today, landing arguably the best available combo guard remaining in the country, 6′-4″ Tyrone Wallace of Bakersfield (CA), a Top 100 prospect.

The rangy and athletic Wallace picked California over Colorado, according to multiple reports. Though he was valued by many as a point guard, the development of players on the current roster may dictate which position Wallace starts out his Pac – 12 career at.

Two players signed letters of intent to Cal last year, and both were relatively unknown. The same can be said for Cal’s other 2012 pledge, Kaileb Rodriguez of ThunderRidge (CO). Wallace will bring some much needed firepower for a team that hadn’t landed a player with star potential in 2012 yet, and didn’t in 2011.

Cal was heavily involved in the pursuit of point guard Dominic Artis, a Bay Area native at Findlay Prep (NV), but he ultimately picked Oregon after decommitting from UCLA. Though Artis may be the more skilled player now, it can be argued that Wallace has the potential to be better down the road.

In Wallace, Cal has a potential dynamite Pac-12 player, which was an important win for them on the recruiting trail. Though he may end up playing shooting guard, Wallace was likely the best player left in the country that could also play point guard, a fact which also speaks to what this means for Cal.
