The decommitment last week of point guard Jevon Thomas meant, for a brief time, that St. John’s no longer had a pledged Class of 2012 prospect. That amount of time turned out to be extremely brief, as multiple sources are reporting today that 6′-7″ power forward Ricardo Gathers of Riverside Academy (LA) has committed today. St. John’s has long been the clubhouse leader for the Top 30 prospect in the Class of 2012.
Gathers is just what the doctor ordered for the Red Storm, as he is a tough and strong enforcer that will be necessary for success against the more physical Big East opponents that they will face. He’s also among the most productive players in the country, having averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds per game in league play.
St. John’s is bringing in nine new players in their recruiting class next season. Gathers is an important missing piece to the group, which is typified by athleticism and finesse oriented players. He will bringing a grind it out toughness, consistent scoring near the cup, and the ability to rebound better than his 6′-7″ height indicates. At 240 pounds, Gathers is a strong presence at the power forward position. Hoopniks watched Gathers at the Las Vegas Fab 48, and he exhibited ideal toughness for the Brandon Bass Elite team.
Next up for the Red Storm is the quest to secure the services of elite point guard/wing forward Kyle Anderson, a 6′-8″ prospect from St. Anthony (NJ). Anderson previously set his list as the Red Storm, Seton Hall, Florida, Georgetown, and UCLA, and is set to announce in September. St. John’s is certainly considered one of the favorites for Anderson’s services.
